What are Braces?

Braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment. Traditional braces consist of brackets that attach to the front of each tooth. An archwire connects all of the brackets and is used to shift the teeth into proper alignment.

Benefits of Braces

Braces offer many benefits, including:

Straighter teeth. Braces are designed to straighten teeth into the correct position in your jaw.
Proper bite alignment. Braces can make the necessary adjustments so that your upper row of teeth meets together properly with the bottom row of teeth.
Better looking smile. Having straighter teeth helps your smile look more natural.
Improved oral health. Straight teeth and a properly aligned bite promote dental and oral health. Your teeth are easier to keep clean and help you avoid jaw pain.

Types of Braces Offered

We provide the following types of braces to our patients:

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are made of stainless steel and are the most common type of braces.

Clear Brackets

Clear brackets are made of porcelain or ceramic and blend in with the natural color of your teeth. They are less noticeable than metal braces but work the same way.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces consist of brackets that allow the archwire to be snapped into place without the use of wires or elastic bands. They can be metal or clear.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces attach to the back side of the teeth. They can still shift the teeth into proper alignment but are less visible.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces

How long does treatment take with metal braces?

The average treatment duration for braces ranges from 1 to 3 years. The average child or teenager will have braces for 2 years or less, but adults may need closer to 3 years.

What is the best age to get braces?

We typically recommend braces in the adolescent years, between 11 and 14. This is the ideal age because most of the primary teeth have been shed and the permanent teeth are in place. It is also a time for significant growth spurts due to puberty, which can make it easier for the teeth and jaw to be adjusted.

How do I know if my child needs braces?

Sometimes it seems obvious that a child needs braces because they have noticeably crooked teeth. But not all orthodontic issues are obvious, and may still need to be corrected. An orthodontic evaluation can determine when and if treatment is necessary.

Are metal braces uncomfortable?

Metal braces can cause some discomfort in the first few days to a week after getting them put on. Your teeth may feel sore and you may experience some mild irritation of the inside of your lips and cheeks. Orthodontic wax can be placed over your brackets to relieve soft tissue irritation and over-the-counter pain medication can help ease sore teeth. Discomfort typically subsides after the first week as your mouth gets used to your braces.

Do lingual braces work as well as traditional braces?

Lingual braces, the type that attaches to the back side of your teeth, can be as effective as traditional braces for some patients. It depends on your individual needs and the types of corrections that need to be made to your teeth.

Do clear braces stay clear?

Clear braces can develop stains over time and become less discreet. The key to keeping your clear braces looking clear is to brush your teeth after each time you eat to remove food particles and residue.

Are braces covered by insurance?

If your dental insurance includes coverage for orthodontic treatment, braces are a qualified treatment option. In most cases, insurance will only cover a portion of your treatment, but it depends on your plan and provider.

Do I need to wear retainers after getting my braces removed?

You will need to wear retainers for some time after you get your braces off to maintain your results and keep the teeth from shifting back into their previous position. You may need to wear them full-time for a few months, and then just at night.
